The 4th international Alps Art Academy will take place in the Safien Valley, Grisons, Switzerland between August 25 and September 3, 2022. Held every two years at the Berghotel Alpenblick, in the heart of the picturesque village of Tenna, the summer school focuses on land and environmental art.

The Alps Art Academy aims to develop a dialogue between the canonical Land and Environmental Art of the 1960s and 70s and contemporary approaches to art-making situated in the Alpine landscape. The Academy establishes a platform for a discussion of a potential future of Land Art, which integrates the topics of landscape, nature and the environment along with medial, societal, cultural and historical aspects.

The 2022 edition of the Academy will gather 20 participants from around the world. We are committed to diversity across social, gender and career level groups.

Requirements
We seek motivated candidates willing to commit to a participatory work in the Alpine landscape in an international environment of the Academy. We encourage applications by artists interested in working with the landscape and the environment and, to the same extent, by theoreticians, mediators, and curators engaged in research on the topic of land and environmental art.

Applicants must be at least 20 years old at the time of the call for submissions.

Interested applicants should submit a project proposal related either to artistic practice, theory, or mediation. We will consider original proposals that uniquely reflect current debates in visual arts and theory and that can be executed during the running time of the Academy. Not all project proposals will be realized or have to manifest in a physical form by the end of the Academy. However, it is on their basis that the applicants will be selected and assigned to one of the workshops overseen by instructors.

Participants are required to be in residency for the entire duration of the academy (25.08. – 03.09.2022).

Application
The following documents shall be submitted by the deadline:

  1. A completed application form, including a short biography in German or English (max. 2500 characters) that indicates the last five, most relevant exhibitions or publications; a motivation letter (in German or English, max. 2000 characters). In addition to the applicant’s contact information, the application form should also include information related to the applicant’s language skills. Please note that a good command of English is required. When applying for funding, the applicants are expected to provide a justification for financial support (in German or English, max. 600 characters).
  2. Project proposal (in German or English, max. 3500 characters)
  3. Portfolio (in German or English, max. 10 pages)

Application deadline

Please submit electronically the complete application file (application form, project proposal, portfolio) as a single PDF file (max. 6 MB) by May 29, 2022, 23.59 (CET) to info@alpsartacademy.ch.  We accept applications in English and German. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Criteria
The major criteria for awarding a place in the Academy are the quality and originality of the project proposal and the candidate’s motivation. The funding will be distributed on the basis of financial needs and amongst a diversified cohort of participants (including the consideration of their background, gender, age, and career stage).

Jury
The selection process will be conducted by a jury consisting of the Alps Art Academy’s artistic director and selected faculty members. On the basis of the preferences indicated by the applicants, and taking into consideration their knowledge and interests, the jury will assign the applicants to one of the workshops.

Fees
CHF 1‘400.–, USD 1‘450.–, EUR 1‘350.–

The fees include 10 days of the Academy, accommodation in a single bedroom, board, excursions during the academy. The fees do not include travel expenses to/from the academy. The Alps Art Academy strives to keep the participation fee as low as possible. The program’s expenses are subsidized by the Alps Art Academy and its partners.

Funding
The academy is committed to a broad mix of participants (age, gender, origin). Lower-income applicants from economically disadvantaged regions are encouraged to apply for a reduction of the tuition fee. Applicants should provide a letter of justification of financial needs together with their application form (in English or German, max. 600 characters).

Notification / payment
Applicants will be notified of the outcomes of the competition by email by mid-June 2022. Selected candidates must transfer the participation fee to the Alps Art Academy by June 30, 2022 the latest. If the payment has not been received by June 30, 2022, the commitment will be forfeited and the place will be passed on to the next candidate on the waiting list.
