Sound Fossil I is an intervention in the landscape addressing a geographical memory around the mountain village of Tenna. Vibeke Mascini collected two large Cassis shells from a far away coast and implemented these within the mountain scape. She buried the shells on a location where two tectonic plates collided in ancient history; stowing the sea bedding to take the shape of mountains over time. Traces of former sea life are still found on the area where Sound Fossil I takes place. Mascini positioned the shells so that they often catch the wind blowing over the mountain flanks, accumulating the sound of the sea.

With her art practice Vibeke Mascini (NL, 1989) looks into cases in which cultural systems falter and regularities shake. She researches elements within the history of science, landscape and language. Departing from existing frameworks Mascini hacks their definitions and results along the course of her projects. www.vibekemascini.com
